Moving on after a Divorce

If you have recently gone through a divorce and you are struggling to adjust to life as a single person, consider the following tips provided by the Chicago Tribune:
Take time to focus on your health
Withdrawing from social settings after your divorce can deepen your depression. While you may not feel like going to dance clubs, getting out and exercising can provide you social interaction as well as provide numerous physical benefits. Join a gym or a running group and see how much better you feel after working up a sweat while meeting new people. You might be surprised at the new perspective you gain after working out.
Talk it over
Don’t keep all your emotions about your divorce inside. Grab your best friend, join a support group, or see a private therapist, but find somebody to talk to about your feelings. The sooner you deal with the hurt and anger, the quicker you will come to terms with the relationship being over and what you need to move forward.
Grab a good book
If you need to escape reality, grab a good book. Allowing yourself some down time to get lost in your imagination can feed your mind. Escaping the real world by reading is much healthier than turning to drugs or alcohol. Additionally, a great book doesn’t result in you making embarrassing moves like texting or calling your ex-spouse and stating things you will regret the next day!
One of the best ways to feel better about yourself is to give to others in need. Not only will volunteering provide you social interaction with others, it will also keep you busy while building your self-esteem.
Don’t focus on all the things your ex did wrong or all the things you miss about married life. Instead, be grateful for all of the loved ones you have in your life. Spend time with friends and family members you haven’t gotten to see lately. In fact, take time to do all the things you haven’t had time to do such as taking vacations, learning to ballroom dance, or whatever else you want to do!
Finally, remember that you are not the only one to have gone through a divorce. People all around you have survived their break-up and understand what you are going through.
